I never knew my grandfathers, so I indulge in a bit of wishful thinking here, perhaps.

Grands
By Dallas Denny
Grandpa smelled like Old Spice
Grandma smelled like mint
He used to take her with him
Nearly everywhere he went
He always called her Darlin’
She always called him Jack
They rode in the front seat
Her wheelchair in the back
They met when he was twenty
She was twenty-three
She was a little older
But not as wise as he
She was pale and pretty
Calico and grace
He was big and sturdy
With a thoughtful kind of face
Grandpa loved to whittle
Oh, the stories he would tell
Grandma’d sit and listen
When her legs began to fail
They lived out in the country
Where I would run and play
And what I’d give if I could only
Have them back today
Grandpa smelled like Old Spice
Grandma smelled like mint
He used to take her with him
Nearly everywhere he went
He always called her Darlin’
She always called him Jack
They rode in the front seat
Her wheelchair in the back
