Dan Fogelberg’s “Same Old Lang Syne” was an influence on this song. Here, too, old flames meet in a grocery store.

Something Unfinished
By Dallas Denny
In the back seat at the drive-in
In his Chevrolet ’55
She was sixteen, he was twenty
They were together and very alive
They weren’t watching the movie
They were walking the edge of a line
But she had to be home by eleven
They didn’t quite do it that time
Then he was called to the service
She married a mechanic named Jim
He found him a nice German lady
And they had ’em a couple of kids
But she was a widow at fifty
He had a messy divorce
And whenever they thought of each other
It was always with a touch of remorse
Refrain:
And oh, oh, all of you ladies
And oh, oh, all of you men
Isn’t there something you never did finish
You’d finish if you got the chance
It was over thirty years later
He went out to buy him some beer
The lady at the checkout looked familiar
It sent them tumbling back through the years
He still had that very same Chevy
They sat there and talked long and good
But when they went to ride by the drive-in
There the Budget Motel now stood
Refrain
