Waiting for Reinforcements

or

 For Some Reason

It’s Extraordinarily Interested

In the Super Bowl

A Paranoia by Dallas Denny

It hovers in the air

At parades and festivals

At inaugurations and celebrations

At contests and dedications

Waiting for reinforcements

It keeps a close eye on us

That sausage-shaped ship

It wants us to think it’s hollow

Filled with helium

Or some such

So ponderous! So silent!

Flashing messages of faith

And tidings of good cheer

While floating over New Orleans

Or sailing high above Lady Liberty

It’s only biding time

Waiting for the rest of the fleet

One day you’ll awake

And rush to a window

And find the sky is filled with them

Pass the word!

We must capture it and study it!

We haven’t much time

We must get it now

It wants us to think it’s hollow

Filled with helium

Or some such
