I’ve collaborated on songs only rarely, but I often think about the amazing music that comes out of lyricist/composer teams like Elton John and Bernie Taupin or George and Ira Gershwin or John Lennon and Paul McCartney. Out of those thoughts, somehow, came this song.

One Half of the Song

By Dallas Denny

I put the words to the paper

And they always sound like they’re wrong

Then you come and set them to music

And suddenly make them a song

I’m the poet and you are the piper

You’re music and I am the verse

So much gained in sweet combination

So why won’t you come and rehearse?

All I have left is the lyric

The lyric, since you’ve been gone

All I have left is the lyric

And that’s only one-half of the song

Where did you go with your woodwinds

And where did you go with your strings

Don’t you find your sonatas are empty

Without some iambics to sing?

All I have left is the lyric

The lyric, since you’ve been gone

All I have left is the lyric

And that’s only one-half of the song

Wihtout notes, then I cannot sing it

If not  sung, cannot call it a song

If you have a tune, won’t you bring it?

I’ve been wanting to sing for so long

So, won’t you come back where you’re needed

Won’t you come here where you belong?

We’ll wed your tune and these lyrics

And we’ll have one hell of a song

All I have left is the lyric

The lyric, since you’ve been gone

All I have left is the lyric

And that’s only one-half of the song
